Relationship of the Czech Catholic Community to the European Union
Hobzík, Mikuláš ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Salamon, Janusz (referee)
The bachelor thesis builds on the academic debate on the relationship between religion and politics and explores the hitherto unexplored attitude of the Czech Catholic milieu towards the European Union, through the prism of views on EU migration policy. Using the method of media discourse analysis, the attitudes of seven prominent figures in the Czech Catholic milieu and their positions on the issue of migration and the related EU response are examined during the migration crisis between 2015 and 2017. The analysed attitudes are categorised as belonging to the established attitudes concerning European integration - Euroscepticism and Euro-optimism. The results show a balanced representation of both trends, with a slight predominance of Euroscepticism. The Czech Catholic milieu thus reflected the divisions within Czech society on several issues related to the EU and migration. Therefore, the religious beliefs of the Catholics surveyed do not represent a unifying factor in political views on the EU and the Czech Catholic environment does not form a coherent ideological stream Keywords The Catholic church; European union; migration crisis; refugees; Czech Catholic milieu

This study also discusses the situation of the Catholic Church after 1948 when the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia came to power. The Catholic Newspaper was established in 1949 and at that time, it represented the only periodical of the Catholic Church which could strengthen the belief of people as well as provide religious education. Other Catholic journals were discontinued shortly after the Communist coup in February 1948. The Catholic Church became one of the major enemies of the new government. A part of this study deals with the negotiations of the main representatives of the state as well as the Catholic Church. The failure of establishing an agreement led to a new religious policy in Czechoslovakia; the policy comprised administrative measures against the Catholic Church, processes with Church Authorities and restrictions in the education system of theologians. To chosen problematics I approach through a concept of spirituality which enables us to have a preview on other phenomena and processes that disrupted catholic religiosity. My thesis starts in the Enlightenment which has had a quite underlying ideological influence on the position churches all over the Europe, while I complemented this chapter by secularization aspects of Judeo-Christian tradition. The next chapter dedicating to 19. century is primarily focused on modernization processes (especially Czech nationalism) which could replace or suppressed traditional religiosity. The short 20. century is devided on formation of relationship between state, church and society (The First Republic and communist period) and simoustaneously in framework of this part it is introduced postmodern transformation of religion whose ,,offshoots" characterise present Czech spirituality. The Bachelor thesis The persecution of the Roman Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia between the years 1948 and 1950 deals with the issue of the Czechoslovak post-war history concerning the reprisals against objectors of the communist regime. The aim of the thesis lies in the processing of the explorational question about the extent of the impact of the communist persecution on the activity of the Catholic Church and about the efforts of the communist regime to enforce the submission of the Church through the synthesis of particular conclusions of given chapters. In the researched period between the years 1948 and 1950 the work describes the consequences of the negotiations between the representatives of the Church and the regime, the importance of the newly issued laws and the results of the selected forms of the persecution of the Church members. The thesis concludes that the Church laws were the most significant impulses, affecting the Church position in the society in the both researched aspects. All gained findings prove that the Church was weakened, however, it morally resisted to the pressure and aggressions of the communist regime and became the symbol of the resistance.
